Novatel card inserted into the "laptop" without installing the drivers first. This is not the recommended steps, but demonstrates what will occur if the drivers are not installed first.
1. Insert the modem device
2. Click Next
3. Your computer will begin a search.
4. Then this error message
5. Corrective action is to properly install the drivers first. Please continue reading this article.
Steps on correctly installing the Novatel USB720 Modem
1. Insert the CD
- CD should auto-start.
- If the CD does not auto-start:
- Windows XP:
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Click Browse
- Navigate to the CD drive
- Click on the Autorun.exe file
- Windows Vista
- Click Start
- Click Search
- Click Browse
- Navigate to the CD drive
- Click on the Autorun.exe file
2. Click on Install MobiLink
3. After seeing a "Preparing to Install" message, you should see a display similar to this screen shot.
4. Click Next
5. Click in the circle next to "I accept the terms in the license agreement."
6. Click Next
7. Click Install
8. After seeing some Installing MobiLink screens
9. GCI recommends ensuring the check mark is next to the "Create Desktop" shortcut - If you do not want a shortcut on your desktop, then click in the box to remove the check mark.
10. Click Finish
11. You can press Quit on the Novatel Wireless MobiLink Connection Manager.
Using the Installed Application
1. Locate the MobiLink desktop short cut
2. Double Click on the MobiLink desktop short cut (MobiLink icon)
3. Insert the USB720 device into a USB slot
4. Your system tray will display a message similar
5. The MobiLink interface will display your ready status
6. The light on the modem device will be steady green. You are not connected to the network yet.
7. Press the Connect button
7a. During the initial installation you may need to perform the following
- If you see a request for an Activation code: enter 688283
- If you see a request for a MIN: enter the 10 digit MIN provided by GCI.
- If you see a request for a MDN: enter the 10 digit MDN provided by GCI.
8. The device will start displaying connection information, and the light on the device will blink.
9. You should be connected to the network and be able to surf the Internet, or check your email.
- Your connection speed will depend on your location, network usage, and signal strength available.
- To attempt to improve the signal strength, flip up the antenna tab.

11. To end the session
- Press Disconnect on the MobiLink interface
12. The MobiLink interface will display a ready to connect status and the light on the modem will become a steady green.
13. You may unplug the modem at this time.
14. To close the MobiLink interface, click on the "power" button located on the right corner of the interface.
Xtreme Mobility offers maximum download speeds of up to 2 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1 Mbps. Average Downloads of 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps and Average Uploads of 300-800Kbps are more typical. Your actual speed will vary, depending on physical location, signal strength, distance from cellular towers, interference (both man-made obstacles, and natural obstacles), and the amount of other network traffic.
Xtreme Mobility is intended to be an extension of your existing cable modem. It offers the additional flexibility to connect outside of the normal office/home area at broadband speeds when receiving an EVDO Rev A connection (see hybrid 1x explanation below when Rev A is not available)
Within the expected coverage area, this product will connect faster that a GSM EDGE device.

- This product has a Hybrid feature. Depending on your location, this feature will attempt to connect at EVDO speeds by default. If not able to connect at that speed, the device will automatically connect at the 1X speed. Connecting at the 1X connection speed will be noticeably slower than connecting at EVDO.
- This area will roam, in the area displayed on the map link above, areas in Canada and the Lower 48, but connection speeds will vary. Additional roaming charges will apply (see usage info below).
- In-state Usage:
- Xtreme Mobility customers with a GCI cable modem pay $19.99/mo and the plan has unlimited statewide usage.
- Xtreme Mobility customers without a GCI cable modem pay $49.99/mo and the plan has a total included in-state usage allowance of 5 Gig. In-state usage above 5 Gig will be charged at a rate of $ 0.10 per MB
- Out-of-State Usage:
- All Xtreme Mobility plans include 40 MB of lower 49 roaming. Roaming usage above 40 MB will be billed at a rate of $1 per MB
Uninstalling the Novatel Application
Steps to uninstall the Novatel application.
1. Open to the control panel
- Start | Control Panel
2. Double-click on the Add or Remove Program icon (shown above)
3. Scroll down to and highlight the MobiLink icon
4. Click on the Remove button
5. The program (application) will uninstall.
The drivers for the Novatel Card may be found on the CD. They are also available through this link, by clicking here.
If you can not locate the CD or use the drivers referenced above, please visit a store to acquire a new CD.
Zip Program
The file referenced above, which may be downloaded, is in a zip file format. Windows Vista includes a program which should extract the files, allowing you to run the application. If you do not have a zip program, you may use any zip program to extract the files. GCI does not recommend or endorse any particular program. This program is not free, but you can use the evaluation copy to extract these files, and then not use the program again.
