How to configure Dial-up Networking for Windows 2000

Step 1

  • Double Click the My Computer icon
  • Double click on Control Panel to expand it
  • Double click the Network and Dial-up Connections folder.
  • Double click the Make New Connection icon, as shown below

Step 2

  • Open/double-click on the Make New Connection icon to reveal the following window
  • On the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizard window, click on Next
  • Click to select Dial-up to the Internet, as shown below, then click the Next button
  • Select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN)."
  • Click Next

 

Step 3

  • Select "I connect through a phone line and a modem"
  • Click Next

  • Enter your GCI.net dial-up User ID (which may or may not be the same as your e-mail user id)
  • Enter your password into the next screen
  • Click Next

 

Step 6

  • Give the connection a name such as "GCI.net or My Connection to GCI"
  • Click Next.

Step 7 (Important)
In the following steps, you will be shown how to set-up your e-mail account. If you decide not to do this at this time, please note that you are NOT DONE configuring your dial-up connection yet. Please click here for additional instructions that you must follow to allow Windows 2000 to access your GCI.net dial-up account.

Step 8
The Internet Connection Wizard will next give you the opportunity to configure your computer to access an e-mail account with Outlook Express or cancel out of the operation.

E-mail Setup

  • Under Display Name enter in your first and last name
  • Click Next

Under E-mail Address enter your GCI Internet e-mail address.
It should be in the format username@ gci.net (or alaska.com), without using "mail."(mail dot) in front of gci.net. Then click Next.

Under E-mail Server Names, enter this information:

  • Select "My incoming mail server is a POP3 server"
  • Incoming (POP) mail server: mail.gci.net
  • Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: smtp.gci.net
  • Check the box next to My server requires authenication under Outgoing Mail Server
  • Click Next

Under Internet Mail Logon enter your information:

  • Account name: Your GCI.net username in all lower case with no spaces
  • Password: Your GCI.net e-mail account password
  • Do Not select "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."
  • Click Next

The following instructions show how to configure an existing Windows 2000 dial-up connection to connect to GCI.net. If you don't already have a dial-up or network connection created, go to step 1 under Resolution.

If not already open, double-click on My Computer, then on Control Panel, and finally on Network and Dial-up Connections. Right-click on the GCI.net dial-up icon that is already have set up and select Properties .

Once the GCI.net Properties window is open, click on the Networking tab. Make sure that the Server Type is set to PPP:Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet.

Click on the Settings button. Ensure the following are NOT checked; ?Enable LCP extensions? or "Negotiate multi-link for single link connections" and click OK.

Close out of the GCI.net Properties window by clicking OK and then test your new configuration. You should now be able to connect to GCI.net.
