An easy way to set up both your Dial-up and e-mail program at the same time is to use the built-in Internet Wizard program. To set up Dial-up only, scroll to the More Information section.

 

Step 1

  • Click on the Start button
  • Select the Run... option

Step 2

  • In the text box type in the word inetwiz
  • Click OK


Step 3

  • Click on the circle with the message
  • Select Connect using my phone line; the black dot should be inside the circle
  • Click Next

Step 4

  • Enter the correct local area Dial-up number, for Anchorage it is 222-4638.
    > Show All GCI.net Dial-Up Access Numbers
  • Ensure the Use the area code and dialing rules box is NOT checked.
  • Click Next

Step 4a

  • Click on the "Advanced?" button
  • In the Advanced Connection Properties screen, you need to put a check in Disable LCP Extensions.
  • Click the OK button
  • Click Next

Step 5

  • Enter your User name
  • Enter your Password
  • Click Next
    Note: You established this information when creating your account. Be sure these are your access username and password and not your e-mail username and password. (Though you may have elected for these be the same.)

Step 6

  • In the Name text box enter Connection to GCI
    (You may enter any name here, this is to help you identify the connection)
  • Click Next

Step 7

  • Select Yes to create a new Internet mail account
  • Click Next
    (If you select No, go to Step 12)

Step 8

  • Enter your name in the Display name field
    This name will be name displayed in the from section of all e-mails you send. It is similar to the return address on regular mail. If you are a business, you may want to enter the business name.
  • Click Next

Step 9

  • Enter your e-mail address; it will be what you agreed to when signing up.
    An example is username@gci.net
  • Click Next

Step 10

  • Select POP3 in box stating My incoming mail sever is POP3
  • Enter mail.gci.net in the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) (SMTP) server text box.
    (Make sure the words are lower case)
  • Enter smtp.gci.net in the Outgoing mail server.
    (Make sure the words are lower case)
  • Click Next

Step 11

  • Enter your e-mail Account User name
  • Enter your e-mail Password
  • Note: If you want the system to remember your password, check the remember password box.
    Ensure the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) block is NOT checked.
  • Click Next

Step 12
You have completed the steps for establishing a dial-up and e-mail account.

  • Click Finish

Configuring Dial-up Only

Step 1

  • Click the Start button
  • Click the Control Panel icon
  • Double-click the Network and Internet Connections icon
  • Click on the Make New Connection icon

Step 2
Displays the Welcome to the Internet Wizard

  • Click Next

Step 3

  • Click on the circle with the message Connect to the Internet; the black dot should be inside the circle.
  • Click Next

Step 4

  • Click on the circle with the message Set up my connection manually; the black dot should be inside the circle
  • Click Next

Step 5

  • Click on the circle with the message Connect using a dial-up modem
  • Click Next

Step 6

  • For your ISP Name enter Connection to GCI
  • Click Next

Step 8

  • Enter your User name
  • Enter your Password
  • Reenter the password for confirmation
    Note: You established this information when creating your account. Be sure these are your access username and password and not your e-mail username and password. (Though you may have elected to have these be the same.)
  • Ensure all three of the check boxes are checked
  • Click Next


Step 9
You have completed the dial-up connection

  • Check the box next to Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop if you want a shortcut to this dialer placed on your desktop.
  • Click Finish
