Steps to change Windows Operating System DNS Settings

How To

Chose your Operating System (OS) from the list below; to see the steps for your specific OS.

Windows XP
Windows 2000
Windows 98 /SE
Windows ME
Windows 95
Windows NT

Windows XP

Left mouse click on the Start button.
Left mouse click on the Control Panel link
Left mouse click on the Network and Internet Connections link.
Left mouse click on Network Connections located at the bottom of the window.
Right mouse click on the Local Area Connection picture (icon).
Left mouse click on Properties from the drop down box.
Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Click on the Properties button.
GCI recommends you use DHCP- this will work with a Static IP Your IP device will automatically receive the same IP, but if you want to hard code, continue with the next steps.
Change the Preferred DNS Server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.12
Change the Secondary DNS server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.13
Left mouse click on the OK button.
Left mouse click on the Ok button.
You may need to restart your computer. Your changes are in place and you should be connected to the Internet.

Windows 2000

Double Left mouse click on my computer.
Double Left mouse click on control panel.
Double Left mouse click on Network and Dial up Connections.
Right mouse click on the Local Area Connection picture (icon).
Left mouse Click on the word Properties from the drop down box.
Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) with your Ethernet Card.
Left mouse click on the Properties button.
GCI recommends you use DHCP- this will work with a Static IP Your IP device will automatically receive the same IP, but if you want to hard code, continue with the next steps.
Change the Preferred DNS Server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.12
Change the Secondary DNS server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.13
Left mouse click on the OK button.
Left mouse click on the Ok button.
You may need to restart your computer. Your changes are in place and you should be connected to the Internet.

Windows 98/SE

Double Left mouse click on My Computer.
Double Left mouse click on the Control Panel icon.
Double Left mouse click on the word Properties from the drop down box.
Double Left Mouse click on the Network icon.
Highlight the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) with your Ethernet Card
Left mouse click on the Properties button.
Left mouse click on the DNS Configuration tab.
GCI recommends you use DHCP- this will work with a Static IP Your IP device will automatically receive the same IP, but if you want to hard code, continue with the next steps.
Change the Preferred DNS Server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.12
Change the Secondary DNS server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.13
Left mouse click on the OK button.

Right mouse click on Network Neighborhood
Left mouse Click on the word Properties from the drop down box
Highlight the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) with your Ethernet Card
Left mouse click on the Properties button
Left mouse click on the DNS Address tab
GCI recommends you use DHCP- this will work with a Static IP Your IP device will automatically receive the same IP, but if you want to hard code, continue with the next steps.
Change the Preferred DNS Server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.12
Change the Secondary DNS server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.13
Left mouse click on the OK button
Left mouse click on the Ok button
You may need to restart your computer. Your changes are in place and you should be connected to the Internet.

Highlight the TCP/IP Protocol.
Left mouse click on the Properties button.
Left mouse click on the DNS tab.
GCI recommends you use DHCP- this will work with a Static IP Your IP device will automatically receive the same IP, but if you want to hard code, continue with the next steps.
Change the Preferred DNS Server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.12
Change the Secondary DNS server to the new IP address: 209.165.131.13
Left mouse click on the OK button.  
Left mouse click on the Ok button.
